Hormones Cause Migraines
in Men, Women, and Children

Over 90% of all migraines occurring in men, women, and children are caused by the body's inability to properly manage the changes in hormone production.

The more precise cause of hormonal migraines may be seen as the release of neurochemicals during times of hormone fluctuation. These neurochemicals start the process that can generate a painful migraine headache and associated aura, nausea and vomiting.

Tuliv migraine research under the direction of Lyle Henry has shown that even "tension and stress" headaches can be traced to the hormones secreted by the body during times of stress. In addition, it found the hormones that cause migraine attacks to occur during the early morning hours, i.e. 4 AM, and is also those involved in late afternoon attacks.

DNA

In order to talk about hormone related migraines, we must first understand that the reason a person is susceptible to migraine attacks is inherited as a gene in the DNA. As part of his migraine research, Lyle Henry predicted in 2003 that this gene would be found in the mitochondria of the cells that produce specific hormones and that have hormone receptors available to receive the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland (Tuliv Migraine Theorem 2003).

Now identified as a gene known as MTHFR, this gene creates a dysfunctional reaction in the aforementioned cells. The Tuliv Migraine Theorem is based on these discoveries and the migraine prevention solution that resulted is now being proven in part by the same research center in Australia that confirmed the existence of the gene (Genomics Research Centre of Australia’s Griffith University).

Hormone Patterns = Migraine Patterns

Although it is easier to identify the hormonal cause of migraines in women, the natural cause of migraines is the same for both women and men.Even so, women are 80% more likely to get migraines than men and their migraine patterns are generally predictable as the often correspond to the hormonal changes of monthly menstrual cycles. On the other hand, men tend to have more episodic migraines and the majority of cluster type headaches.

Tuliv research found that migraine attacks directly correlate with the patterns of hormone changes that occur each day, during the course of a month, and throughout the various stages of life.

Migraines Happen as Hormones Change Throughout Life

For many people, the onset of migraines begins during early puberty and adhere mainly to the general migraine patterns throughout their lives. Still others may not be affected by migraines until he or she has passed the age of 40.

Women whose migraines did not start earlier in life, may find that they begin when they start on birth control pills, at the end of a pregnancy, or after they add hormones to their bodies.

One pattern that seems very predictable, regardless of whether a person has had a lifetime pattern of migraines or not, is that sometime around the age of 40 (take or give five years) most migraineurs will experience a progressive worsening of the migraine problem as the number of migraine incidents increases in frequency, severity, and duration. This generally leads to a transformation of the pattern into one of chronic daily migraines.

These unique discoveries of Tuliv Migraine Research helped in the development of the first migraine prevention formula to directly address the cause of migraines - Tuliv Migraine Defense.

How Do Hormones Cause Migraines?

To answer that question we need to talk a little about the natural science of the body. First, we need to keep in mind that migraines do not occur in the brain; rather they occur outside the brain in the trigeminal-vascular system that is comprised of nerve fibers intertwined with tiny blood vessels. Second, it should be noted that when we talk about hormonal migraines, we (Tuliv Migraine Research) are not talking about the three major hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, but rather the "messenger" hormones that manage their production.

These "messenger" hormones are secreted from glands. Two of the glands we are most concerned with are the pituitary gland and the pineal gland. Although the hormones they produce are involved in the cause of migraines, neither of these glands is defective in any way nor are they directly associated with a migraine.

Glands secrete the hormones into the blood stream on their way to specific cells in the body that have corresponding "hormone receptors" that allow these messengers into the cells so that they can be used as orders for hormone production.

The pituitary gland secretes the messenger hormones for the production of major hormones, including testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, which are necessary for sexual related development and functions of human reproduction.

As mentioned, the hormone receptors receive these hormone messengers and respond accordingly by starting or stopping the production of the major hormones. For example, both estrogen and testosterone can be produced by a male and a female as part of the natural cycle of the human body.

For most people these functions go on without any adverse reaction or problems; however, for the person who has genetically inherited the gene for migraines (located within the mitochondria of these hormone production cells) something happens that is associated with the cause of migraines.

Deep Secrets of Migraines

For a still unknown reason, when the nucleus of these cells interprets these messages, it directs an adverse reaction in the cell that sends neurochemicals into the blood stream. Once in the blood stream these neurochemicals cause a reaction that produces the migraine inducing chemical CGRP.

CGRP causes the blood vessels intertwined throughout the trigeminal nerve to expand or dilate. As these blood vessels expand and fill with more blood, they put pressure on the tiny surrounding nerve fibers and this is what is felt as the headache pain of a migraine.

Stopping a Migraine

To make matters worse, the nerve fibers become irritated and react in a way that causes an increase in the level of CGRP. When this happens, the pain level increases and the duration of the migraine attack lengthens in time.

One of the ways to stop or abort a migraine is through the use of a triptan drug. The reason triptans like Imitrex work well to relieve the pain is that they stop the production of CGRP. This allows the blood vessels to constrict back to normal and the pain subsides as the pressure is released.

As the effect of the triptan wears off, the level of CGRP may once again increase and the pain resumes, in what some people call a "rebound" migraine. In reality this pain may be a continuation of the original migraine.

Unfortunately, just having this knowledge will not prevent your migraines; however, it is the scientific basis that was used in the development of the migraine preventive Tuliv Migraine Defense.

Women - Menstrual Migraines Can Be Prevented

Women, of course, may have monthly migraine patterns that correspond to their menstrual cycles. Most often these migraines occur during two or three days just prior to the start of the period, at the end of the period, and again around the time of ovulation. Naturally, there are as many variations of these patterns as there are women having migraines.

The stages of a menstrual cycle are controlled mainly by two of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. These are the luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). After being secreted by the pituitary gland into the blood stream they are received into specialized hormone producing cells through hormone receptors of these cells which contain the "migraine gene" as part of their DNA..

Depending on what menstrual stage the female body is entering into, either estrogen or progesterone becomes the dominant hormone being produced. Due to a dysfunction caused by the "migraine gene", there is a latent and prolonged production of the migraine inducing neurochemical CGRP. This is the reason menstrual migraines can be of the most severe.
